We believe that a responsible breeder should not simply be raising kittens, but should also take responsibility for the health and welfare of the breed as a whole. This is why we’re working with new bloodlines, but we also feel that our responsibility to the breed does not end when a kitten leaves home but should extend to the wider Tonkinese community, so we are actively involved in Tonkinese Rescue. This means that we sometimes have rescue Tonkinese who are looking for homes.

Currently needing a home:
Two lovely boys, Bill and Ben, 13 years old, and needing a home without other cats or dogs where they can go outside. Ben needs some medication for his arthritis and Bill also gets some help for his sensitive tummy. Like all Tonkinese they crave love and company and long for a stable and calm environment. They are extremely friendly and affectionate and ready to love their new owner Please contact us if you could help these lovely boys.

Homing a rescue cat

Cats come in to rescue for many reasons: sometimes the owner has died, or their personal circumstances change so that they can no longer have a cat, but sometimes a cat becomes unhappy in its home because it no longer gets on with other cats, it becomes upset by the arrival of a new baby and starts to show behavioural problems, or for any number of other reasons. The cats can be any age from about a year old to gentle old pensioners: our job is to help these cats find a safe and happy permanent home for the rest of their lives. We do not usually have kittens in rescue.

If you are interested in homing a rescue adult please get in touch with us using the contact page. Please don’t be insulted if we ask a lot of questions about your home: because rehoming is traumatic for a cat we try to ensure that it only happens once in a cat’s life, so we will try to check for any of the known ‘risk’ factors that might mean it won’t settle in the new home. Usually the cats are perfectly normal, healthy and well-balanced individuals, but sometimes we have one with special needs, so if you would feel able to manage a cat like this please let us know.

Cats coming in to rescue are checked by a vet, and receive any urgent medical attention that they need. This is paid for from our Rescue fund. No cats are rehomed with long-term veterinary or behavioural problems unless the new owner is made fully aware of any issues of this nature and is happy to take them on.

Rehoming your cat

If you have a Tonkinese and need to rehome it for any reason, please contact us. Usually we try to rehome cats directly from their first home to the new home, so that there is no unnecessary time spent in a strange place. However, we do have facilities for bringing cats in to a temporary home in an emergency. It is important that before contacting us you first contact the original breeder of the cat if you know who that was, since most good breeders prefer to manage the rehoming of cats they have bred themselves.

Funding

Because we sometimes have heavy veterinary bills we ask both those rehoming a cat, and the rehomers to make a donation to the Rescue fund if they are able to do so, to help with these costs.

Sometimes people like to make a donation in memory of a much loved cat or a relative who loved Tonkinese, but many people don’t need a reason, they just like to know that they can help a needy cat. If you would like to make a donation to the Tonkinese Rescue Fund - and all money in that fund is spent entirely on the welfare of needy cats, nothing is spent on admin - please contact us and we can put you in touch with our treasurer.
